Setting the perfect table

At La DoubleJ, we like to think there are a million and one ways to set your table (particularly with our pieces). You can go full maximalist with layer upon layer of print, keep it minimal with pops of solid color, mix our patterned porcelains with plain white plates from your own collection – the sky’s the limit, sister! That said, if you’re just dipping your toe into creative tablescaping, there are some tips we’ve learned from our Italian community that basically guarantee celebration setting success. Scroll for all the high vibration hosting wisdom.

When the porcelains themselves have such bold primary colors (like our vibrant, joy-inducing Solar Collection pieces), we recommend balancing out all that brightness with a subtler textile, using a hue from the porcelains so the setting feels cohesive (like this romantic white lace tablecloth that matches the negative white space on the plates and bowls on the table).

We like to contrast a super feminine hue, like the blush tones in the Libellula Collection, with a richer color, like the green of our Murano Wine Glasses or on our striped Riviera Napkins. Luckily, we’ve designed each collection to include pieces that work perfectly in sync with one another, so if you want to go full-on Libellula, you can.

Really special occasions call for really special settings, but you don’t want to overwhelm the feast with a madcap clash of colours. The soft lavender of our Tackle tablecloth goes beautifully with the blues of our Napoli porcelains and the rich, smokey Coupes in that same purple family.

Time for Textiles!

Italians are all about elevating the everyday, and a tablecloth is a great way to boost any celebration. Some occasions call for classic eleganza, for which the intricate white lace tablecloth or the regal Tudor option is perfect, but if you’re simply seeking to up the ante at your next girl’s night in, all of our printed 100% made in Italy linens are a beautiful way to make dinner more decadent. Want to go even further? Pick up some printed napkins in a colorway that complements your tablecloth for mix and match tabletop magic.

Meals here in Milan come in several courses (hence all the different kinds of plates we have at La DoubleJ!) If you want to keep it somewhat simple (but still make a statement), layering a printed charger under your white plates at home makes for a delicious, but still demure, impact. But if you’re hoping for a setting that’s super Instagrammable, we recommend laying the table with the matching Soup and Dinner sets  before the guests arrive, so they can’t help but whip out their smartphones, subito.

Our mixed Dessert Plate sets are great conversation pieces at the end of a meal as your guests compare which porcelain they got and find their favorite!

J.J. Martin loves using her grandparents’ vintage cutlery with our more modern printed homewares. But the true star of the setting show? Our colorful Murano glassware handblown by our artisans in Venice. We love setting up a welcome bar with all our different options – our smokey Coupes and Tumblers, our Perfetto Wine Glasses, our Rigadin Water Glasses , etc. - it feels like a full aperitivo art installation! Feel free to break the rules when it comes to what you serve in your glasses – we often use our Water Glasses for wine and our Tumblers for juice at brunch.

Our Sippers are inspired by classic Italian digestif glasses, but they work just as well as bud vases sprinkled around the table.
Showstopping
Centerpieces

For extra dramatic flair, there’s nothing like a striking centerpiece to take an occasion from “catch-up” to “celebration” in one swift set-up. For us at La DoubleJ, that means flowers, flowers, flowers – the more the merrier. We like to create arrangements that feel organic, abundant and not too precious, though we always like to match the feel and palette of the table. Lucky we have so many vases in porcelain and Murano glass to choose from!
